League of American Bicyclists – Smart Cycling Course Descriptions

Smart Cycling Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced
Smart Cycling is the name of the League’s bike education program as well as the name of the foundation course for the League’s education program. The Smart Cycling curriculum includes basic, intermediate, and advanced building blocks that allow for customized instruction to meet the needs of any cyclist from beginner to experienced. Smart Cycling instruction can include ‘classroom’ and /or ‘on-bike’ instruction. The Smart Cycling Complete class is open to adults and youth 15 years of age or over.

Smart Cycling Complete
The Smart Cycling Complete course encompasses the basics, intermediate, and advanced components of the Smart Cycling program curriculum and includes classroom education, on-bike parking lot drills, and road riding. The Complete course is typically 9 hours (usually over two days) and comprises four hours of ‘classroom’ instruction and five hours of ‘on-bike’ instruction. The Smart Cycling Complete class is open to adults and youth 15 years of age or over.

Note: With some exceptions, adventurECO generally offers the Smart Cycling Complete course only to groups of 6 or more and by request (mostly if needed as a prerequisite for a League Cycling Instructor (LCI) training seminar).

Bicycling Skills for Youth
Bicycling Skills for Youth is a fun and practical course for developing youth riding skills designed around a series of on-bike educational stations that teach children better bike handling skills. Group and individual instruction is available and open to any youth capable of riding a pedal-equipped bicycle without assistance. The complete Bicycling Skills for Youth is typically a two hour course (involving 13 education stations) but can be customized to meet the needs of the group or individual. Bicycling Skills for Youth is ideal for summer camps, after school programs, or other youth events.

Group Riding
Group Riding instruction is designed for experienced adults and youth over 14 years of age who would like to go on a group ride of any kind – social, charity, recreational, training, touring. Instruction is open to competent cyclists familiar with the techniques for riding individually (ideally by having basic Smart Cycling instruction) prior to the Group Riding instruction.

Smart Cycling Tips for Older Adults
This League of American Bicyclists Smart Cycling module focuses on older adults who are interested in riding but need guidance, and/or encouragement in getting started. The basic Smart Cycling Tips for Older Adults course comprises 1 hour of classroom instruction covering issues and concerns of older bicycle riders, changes that can be made to continue to ride, and other tips and resources. See the Cycling for Older Adults page for additional instruction and service for older cyclists.

Bicycle Friendly Driver Training
Bicycle Friendly Driver training is the League’s newest addition to the Smart Cycling program and aims to educate motorized vehicle drivers about how and why bicyclists travel the roadways in the ways they do with the objective of developing a shared understanding for all users.
