Bicycle Rides and Hidden Eats: Gastro-Ride # 2

This is the second post in an occasional series documenting bicycle rides that include stops at unique local eating and/or drinking establishments in the Charlottesville area. In common vernacular, such establishments are often affectionately referenced as a greasy spoon, dive bar, hole in the wall, mom and pop shop, or off the beaten path. As a reminder, the gastro-ride guiding principles are outlined below (see the Bicycle Rides and Hidden Eats: Gastro-Ride #1 post for background):

  • no national or chain establishments
  • visit to establishment must be part of a longer ride (not just a bike ride to the joint)
  • if an item is featured on the establishment’s building, outdoor sign, or name, I am obliged to order that item
  • if an employee makes an unsolicited menu recommendation, I will order that item

In the spirit of Bike Month, I spent a Saturday afternoon in May (National Bike Month) running errands by bicycle, getting in a lovely bicycle ride and a delicious meal in the process. All told, I rode 23 miles to the following destinations:

  • Jefferson Madison Regional Library (Northside Branch)
  • Charlottesville Community Bikes
  • Remys La Mejor food truck
  • Bluebird box monitoring (select locations in neighborhood)

While the ride did not start as a gastro-ride, after being out and about for a while, it was lunch time and I was in need of refueling to complete the ride home. As I pedaled along, thinking of possible lunch options, I noticed Remy’s La Mejor food truck, an establishment I passed by many times, but had never stopped. Seizing the opportunity for a quick and convenient lunch, I decided to give Remy’s a try. Upon inspecting the menu, I ordered two al pastor tacos and a mandarin orange Jarritos soft drink. My order was ready in just a few minutes, and the tacos were served with onion, cilantro, lime wedges, and a chili sauce with just a bit of heat on the side. At less than $11 (plus tip) it was a good meal for a fair price, and a nice, unexpected, addition to utilitarian bicycle ride. If you happen to be in the Rio area, consider Remy’s La Mejor for delicious, authentic, Mexican cuisine.
