Join the Great Backyard Bird Count 2026

Be a citizen scientist! Join the world in connecting to birds February 13–16, 2026!

Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC)

Each February, for four days, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days we invite people to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to us. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations.

Cycling and Citizen Science

A bicycle is a great tool to facilitate “citizen science” and “cycling with a purpose” comprises some of the most rewarding miles one can enjoy on a bicycle. In addition to the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), cycling can support other citizen science activities. For example, adventurECO Cycling participates in maintaining and monitoring a local Virginia Bluebird Society ‘bluebird trail’. We also regularly report Eastern Box Turtle sightings while cycling (mtb, gravel, and road) using the Virginia Herpetological Society reporting tool.
