Unlock the Benefits of Utilitarian Cycling

Momentum Magazine recently featured an article outlining the myriad reasons to explore bike commuting (i.e., bike to work). While ditching the car for bike commuting is not be feasible for most people. However, the article’s reasons also apply to “utilitarian cycling” for non-work trips.

Here are 33 Reasons to Start Bike Commuting Right Now

The term “commute” is often used interchangeably with one’s daily travel. However, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) definition of commute refers specifically to travel associated with going to and from work. Similarly, US Census Bureau commuting data (i.e., journey to work data) refers only to travel to and from work.

Utilitarian Cycling

Commuting to work (by any mode) accounts for only part of people’s daily travel. Non-work trips comprise the majority of daily trips and miles traveled. Semantics aside, using a bicycle to replace miles that would normally be traveled via another travel mode (i.e., utilitarian cycling) offers many of the same the benefits as bike commuting (which is just one form of utilitarian cycling). Additionally, riding a bike for casual utilitarian purposes is easy to plan. It’s great for running errands, visiting friends, or social outings. It is also much easier to execute than bike commuting to work.
