Mountain Biking and Citizen Science: Reporting Spotted Lanternfly Sightings

On a recent mountain bike ride in the Hollymead area of Albemarle County, I noticed a grouping of spotted lanternfly, an invasive insect species native to China and found in many parts of south and southeast Asia. While the spotted lanternfly feeds on many plant species, its preferred host is the tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), also an invasive species native to China.

On your next mountain bike ride (or hike or trail run), channel your inner citizen scientist and be on the lookout for this invasive species! Spotted lanternfly sightings can be reported to your local Virginia Cooperative Extension or online. Note: There is no need to report spotted lanternfly if you are in a location where it is already known. This includes many parts of Virginia including central Virginia. Check the map linked below to see if the spotted lanternfly has been reported in your area.
