The Virginia Tech Helmet lab recently released new ratings of how well hundreds of bike and football helmets protect against concussions.
Bicycle Helmet Ratings – 2025 Edition
Beyond concussion mitigation, a quality bicycle helmet can also protect cyclists against non-concussion head trauma resulting from contact with the ground or other objects while cycling or mountain biking. However, regardless of safety rating, a bicycle helmet only provides protection when properly fitted and worn. The League of American Bicyclists offers guidance on how to properly fit a bicycle helmet.
Fitting a Helmet:
- Place it on your head without fastening the straps
- There should be a two-fingers width between your eyebrows and helmet
- There should be little movement when you shake your head from side to side
Adjusting Your Helmet:
- The side straps should come to a point just below your ears forming a “Y” shape
- When your mouth is closed, there should be about half an inch between the chin strap and your chin
