On a recent ‘recovery’ mountain bike ride (recovery from CUDO Ultimate (frisbee) summer league games the previous evening), I had the privilege of meeting the following box turtle. After snapping a few photos and bidding each other farewell, we each continued on our respective paths. Upon finishing my ride, I promptly documented this encounter, as I do all of my box turtle encounters, via the Virginia Herpetological Society Box Turtle Reporting Form. This was my first encounter this year, with my previous record being 3 reports in a single year.
Cycling (MTB, road, gravel) provides a great opportunity for box turtle sightings, and I encourage all cyclists (and other outdoor enthusiasts) to embrace their inner ‘citizen scientist’ and contribute to this effort.
