May is Bike Month!

May is national Bike Month, with events planned in communities across the country, including in central Viginia. What can you do to celebrate, individually or as part of the larger cycling community? Here are a few suggestions:

National Bike & Roll to School Day

National Bike & Roll to School Day is May 7, 2025. While May 7 is this year’s official date, communities celebrate any day in May that best fits their schedules. If your school, community, neighborhood, or organization is hosting a Bike & Roll to School Day related event, register it with the National Center for Safe Routes to School.

Participate in a Bike Month Event

Local and national Bike Month events are planned throughout the month of May. Check your local cycling group(s) website(s) for Bike Month events in your area.

Create Your Own Bike Month Event

If organized events are not your cup of tea or do not fit your schedule, do your own thing during Bike Month! Below are a few ideas:

  • Bicycle Commuting

If you have never tried commuting to work by bicycle, why not select one day during Bike Month and give it a try? Although National Bike to Work Day is Thursday May 16, whatever day works best for you is the best day to bike commute.

Interested in bicycle commuting but not quite sure where to start? Check out adventurECO’s Bicycle Commuting Instruction.

  • Run an Errand by Bicycle

If commuting to work by bicycle is not your jam, try using a bicycle for running errands, social events, or other non-work trips. Bicycle trips that replace car trips are the greenest miles for a cyclist.

  • Ride a Bike

If you own a bike, ride it! Even if it has been a while, pull it out of the garage, dust it off, make sure it is in safe working order, and go for a short ride.

Need help learning to ride of re-learning to ride, or assistance with getting your old bicycle back on the road? Contact adventurECO to learn more about our services, schedule a class or customized instruction, or learn to ride a bicycle.

  • Donate a Bicycle

If you have a bicycle that is no longer being used, donate it to your local cycling group who may be able to refurbish it and find it a good home. Alternatively, if you have a bicycle that is in working order but no longer being used, give it directly an individual that may be in need of a bicycle.
